The word 'Yoga' is derived from the Sanskrit root 'Yuj', meaning 'to join' or 'to yoke' or 'to unite'.
My aim with Unity yoga is to create a yoga class where anyone can find a solace on the mat and find a way to unite their mind and body. Anybody can do yoga, you just need a body and to put it on a mat.
I can still clearly remember going to my first yoga class and the calm quiet feeling I had when I left. From that moment I was hooked. As someone who suffers from a very busy mind, anxiety and an inability to "switch off " I found I thought of nothing else other than breathing and holding the postures during class, giving my mind a break.
Over the years I have attended various types of classes but for me the real focus was yogas' simplicity. The fact that I could practice yoga wherever I was with no equipment, made it much more accessible in my busy life. If you think that yoga isn't for you, its probably just that you haven't found the right class or type of yoga yet! All my classes are taught in a way that makes them relatable to everyone, regardless of your spiritual beliefs.
I teach a mix of Hatha Yoga, a combination of asana (postures) combined with breathing exercises. Hatha Yoga will stretch and tone the whole body while bringing peace to the mind. Hatha is suitable for all abilities from complete beginners to the more advanced. My classes are designed to challenge your mind and body and are taught with a sense of humour and fun. You are never too old to start!
Come and give a class a try. Hope to see you soon.
Love and light, Sam
